JOHANNESBURG WATER has asked residents to stop emptying water from their pools on to streets and public pavements.
The City's water and sanitation service provider has also received a number of complaints about the backwash of water on to private properties. According to JW, backwash is only allowed to flow into storm water drains and not sewer drains.
"The discharge of pool water on to streets is not only unsightly, but could also lead to unhygienic build up of stagnant water on pavements," said JW in a statement.
Residents allowing pool water to flow over any road, gutter, storm water drain, watercourse, open ground or private premises are contravening of the Standard Drainage By-laws.
Pool owners, however, are permitted to let their swimming pool water flow into their own drainage system, but must ensure that it does not flow into the street or on to a neighbour's property.
More information on the correct disposal of pool water can be obtained from JW's 24 Hour call centre on 011 688 1500.
