Calling all gourmands
- it's restaurant week

October 13, 2003

By Barbara Ludman

CELEBRITY chefs and the best of Scotland, a brandy tasting theatre and an oyster bar, hands-on workshops and gourmet meals at moderate prices all over town - the annual Gourmet Festival is back in Joburg.

All this week, including Saturday, some three dozen top restaurants will offer a two-course lunch or dinner, plus a glass of Fleur du Cap wine and another of L'Aubade pure mountain water. The Fleur du Cap Restaurant Week (thus, the wine) will give gourmands a chance to experience some of the best food around at reasonable prices, in restaurants including Icon, Wangthai and Ove Flo in Greenside, La Pentola in Pretoria, Soi in Melville, Wandies Place in Dube and the Bell Pepper in Kensington, plus many others. The price: R70 for lunch and R90 for dinner. There are, in addition, six posh restaurants (including La Perla in Pretoria and Linger Longer in Wierda Valley) where lunch will set you back R100 and dinner, R150. For a complete list and menus, go to www.gourmetsa.com/part_rest.html

From Thursday the cooking begins in earnest at the Good Food and Wine Show at Gallagher Estate in Midrand, with celebrity chefs offering four days of demonstrations and workshops. You can watch Valentina Harris preparing Tuscan specials, experience "an amalgamation of tastes" with London chef Michael Moore, learn Thai cooking from Mini C, the chef-patron of Busabong in London, learn more about Angus beef from Scottish chef Garry Watson, learn about deli cuisine from UK chef Guy Wolley, and more. Leading South African chefs and cookery book authors, including Yum's Dario de Angeli, True Love's Dorah Sithole and Sharon Glass of Simply Delicious will also participate. A full schedule of demos and workshops is available online. The workshops are pricey, but the R290 fee includes entrance to the show. Booking is essential: telephone 084-565-0069.

While there, you'll want to sample South newest cultivars in the Wine Walk, try different beers at the Beer Pavilion, sample a bush banquet - in Midrand? - at the Makalali African stand, try different cheeses - and let experts teach the children to cook at The Little People Cooking Zone.

Entrance to the Good Food & Wine Show is R40 for adults and R25 for pensioners and children under 15 years. Hours are 10am to 9pm on Thursday 16 October to Saturday 18 October, and 10am to 6pm on the final day, Sunday 19 October.
