Pikitup wins award, again

November 7, 2003

By Bontle Moeng

FOR the second year running Pikitup has won a major award from the Roodepoort Chamber of Commerce and Industry for its business practices.

At a recent glittering ceremony held at the Dome in Northgate, Pikitup, the City's waste management service provider, was presented with the "Business of the Year" award for large companies operating in and beyond Roodepoort's boundaries.

More than 500 guests attended the occasion, including representatives from the 77 businesses nominated in the 14 categories. Guest speakers included Gauteng premier, Mbhazima Shilowa, and the CEO of African Bank, Tami Sokutu.

Acting managing director of Pikitup, Similo Dingaan, was thrilled Pikitup had repeated the success of last year. "Winning such a prestigious award for two years running is evidence that we are approaching our business the right way," Dingaan said.

Both the public and a panel of independent business experts selected the winners. Nominations were made on the basis of public sentiment and the judging criteria incorporated a wide range of business management indicators: service excellence, financial performance, accountability, equity and other factors indicating sound and responsible business management.

Pikitup would not rest on its laurels, Dingaan said. "We will be back in 2004 and will be doing our utmost to meet and exceed our achievements of the past year."

The Roodepoort Chamber of Commerce and Industry launched their awards in 1986, with a single category - Business Man of the Year. Since then it has grown into a major event, acknowledging the achievements of businesses rather than individuals. In 1992 the awards were changed to "Business of the Year", with seven categories. Now there are 14 categories.

"This year, the response from the Roodepoort community and beyond has been particularly gratifying," said chamber president, Peter Dixon, describing the evening as a premier event on the Roodepoort calendar.

"The awards recognise those companies that have served the interests of the community of Roodepoort," Dixon added, "going beyond the interests of the chamber of commerce itself."

Dixon was keen to see model practices adopted by all businesses in Roodepoort, and viewed the chamber's awards as the ideal springboard to achieve this goal.

"Our winners will be given the opportunity to host networking functions in Roodepoort during the coming year, to showcase their business practices and serve as role models for the whole business community," said Dixon.
