THE hard work of top public servants will be acknowledged tonight when Gauteng premier, Mbhazima Shilowa, announces the winners of the Premier's Service Excellence Awards at a formal function at Gallagher Estate in Midrand.
The awards recognise and encourage top rate performance by Gauteng's public servants and winners are chosen from a shortlist of 12 nominated teams.
Two categories of awards are made: the "Face of Government" awards, for frontline staff who interact directly with the public; and the "Service Delivery Innovation" awards, for the backroom staff who ensure that the wheels of the department turn smoothly.
The "Face of Government" nominees include:
- West Rand district health promotion, Department of Health;
- the Mamelodi hospital, which falls under the Department of Health;
- Tshwane district rehabilitation programme of the Department of Health;
- the motor vehicle licensing and registration best practice model, in the Department of Public Transport, Roads and Works;
- oral health services' prescription protocol committee in the Department of Health and
- Tshwane youth and culture project, Department of Education.
The nominees in the "Service Delivery Innovation" category include:
- traffic management services, in the Department of Public Transport, Roads and Works;
- the education action zone in the Department of Education;
- the heavy vehicle simulator in Department of Public Transport, Roads and Works;
- the health care risk waste management project within the Department of Agriculture, Conservation, Environment and Land Affairs;
- taxi democratisation, Department of Public Transport, Roads and Works; and
- internal communication within the Department of Public Transport, Roads and Works.
This award recognises the backroom teams that provide innovative solutions to support the various departments they serve.
The Premier's Service Excellence Awards were launched last year as an annual programme to improve service delivery to the residents of Gauteng.
Criteria for the awards included regular consultation with customers, high standards, better information about services, and transparency.
