JOHANNESBURG residents are being urged to register this weekend at local stations set up around the city by the Independent Electoral Commission ahead of next year's national elections.
On Saturday 8 November and Sunday 9 November 684 registration offices will be open for people to lodge their details or check whether they are in fact listed on the voter's roll.
According to the IEC 18-million people, out of a total of 27-million eligible voters, are currently on the voter's roll and they are hoping to register the outstanding nine million this weekend.
Voters have to register in the district in which they reside and are reminded they will only be able to vote in the area where they are registered. People living in newly established voting districts and those who have changed their addresses since the last national elections have to update their details with the IEC.
If residents are unsure of where to register, they can telephone the IEC national call centre on 0800 11 8000 for information. The call centre operates between 6am and 9pm daily.
All South Africans 16 years and older will be eligible to register, although only those who are 18 years old on the actual day of the election will be allowed to vote.
People can check on www.elections.org.za whether they are indeed listed on the voter's roll.
Aside from the designated weekend, prospective voters can also register or update their details at their municipal electoral offices between 8am and 5pm from Mondays to Fridays.
BuaNews, the government news service, has reported that the Department of Home Affairs will issue temporary identity certificates to allow people who have applied, but not yet received, identity documents to register.
These temporary documents will be issued this weekend between 8am and 5pm at local Department of Home Affairs offices.
