Scintillating sounds
at the Civic Theatre

THE legendary A Handful of Keys, the sizzling revue starring Ian von Memerty, Roelof Colyn and two grand pianos, returns to the Johannesburg Civic Theatre from 25 November.

The show - simultaneously a revue, a concert, a cabaret, a tribute and a send-up - has been described as a legend in local theatre history, having played to more than 120 000 people in over 300 performances since its inception in 1994.

It now returns to the Tesson Theatre, at the Johannesburg Civic Theatre, for a five-week run, from 25 November to 30 December.

One reviewer described A Handful of Keys as involving "two hot pianos and a firecracker script".

Musical theatre maestro Von Memerty, one of the originators of A Handful of Keys, and the dynamically talented Colyn, perform tunes that range from the classics through ragtime to rock.

Von Memerty has won eight Vita Awards, including for best musical performance, best musical production and best original script, while Colyn has run the musical gamut from arrangement to bandleader.

Sets and lighting have been designed by Denis Hutchinson, with costumes by Margo Fleisch.

A Handful of Keys has won nine theatre awards and over the last eight years audiences have been captivated by the brilliant music and entertaining interlinking patter.

Performances are at 8pm Tuesdays to Fridays, 4pm and 8pm on Saturdays and 4pm on Sundays.

Tickets can be bought at Computicket or from the Johannesburg Civic Theatre. Tickets cost R103 a person, with block bookings for 10 or more people priced at R92 a ticket. Pensioners and students pay R82 a ticket.
