FOR a very different visual experience of Johannesburg, take in the exhibition of maps showing the city's unique features from its geography to its height zones and density.
A one-day exhibition, from 8am to 4pm on Wednesday 19 November, will be held at the City of Johannesburg's Corporate Geographic Information Systems department on the eighth floor, A Block, Metropolitan Centre, Braamfontein.
This exhibition celebrates the fifth anniversary of International Geographic Information Systems Day, which is celebrated as part of Geography Awareness Week.
The awareness week is organised by the National Geographic Society with the aim to "make people aware of geographic information system technology and information", said the department's Marcelle Hattingh.
Geographic information system technology is a computer-based mapping tool that turns information about a location, such as the streets, buildings, water features and terrain, into visual layers.
"The displays will introduce people to the products and services the department offers," said Hattingh. The City's department provides geographic feature maps and detailed information including density, height zone, parking requirements, building lines, full area report and zoning certificates on all Johannesburg properties.
Usually the information gathered by the department is sold to consultants, developers and town planners and researchers. But anyone with an interest in science, technology and information is welcome to view the exhibition, free of charge, to see just how technology has changed over the years and how this affected the way geographical data is processed and stored.
Information from the geographic information systems department could be used in making decisions on developments within the city, assisting in infrastructure and service planning.
"The day will provide an opportunity for those curious about geographic information systems to see its applications in action," said Hattingh.
