A NEW team of senior managers has been appointed by the Gauteng Health Department in an effort to curb over spending at the Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital.
The hospital currently has a budget of almost R804-million and if spending continues at its current rate, the hospital faces an over-expenditure of R120-million by the end of the financial year.
The new team is expected to develop a more effective patient care system and to ensure the hospital operates within the allocated budget. Also planned is the strengthening of management at the hospital so that available resources can be utilised to their maximum, the department said in a statement.
The Soweto hospital is the largest in the southern hemisphere.
Provincial health department spokesperson Simon Zwane said: "We are putting this team together to investigate why the hospital is in such a precarious financial position. We want to bring the situation under control by finding the major cost drivers and closing loop holes."
"The deployed team has prioritised the need to improve security systems to curb theft, the management of pharmaceutical items, and better utilisation of staff," the health department statement said.
Gauteng Health Department spokesperson, Popo Maja, expressed confidence in the measures taken. "This decision to form a team to get the hospital operating at its peak again was taken after careful consideration. It is definitely sufficient to optimise the day to day running of the hospital."
The measures taken are to ensure Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital remains, not only one of the world's leadings academic hospitals, but also an institution of excellence in terms of patient and health care, the statement said.
