THE first of the commemorative blue and white circular plaques went up on six Art Deco city buildings last week. One of the most prominent buildings is His Majesty's, completed in 1944, consisting of three office towers of 11, 14 and 18 storeys, and decorated with sculptor Rene Shapshak's panels and friezes, set against the buildings long, vertical lines.
Another 14 city buildings are to receive plaques. Johannesburg has over 100 Art Deco buildings.
