CRIME prevention, skills development, HIV/Aids, teenage pregnancy, arts and culture as well as sports are among the issues that will be discussed at this year's Johannesburg Regional Youth Summit between 22 and 24 May at the Shaft 17 Conference Centre at Nasrec, south of Johannesbug.
The summit, under the slogan "Youth in action to take opportunities of democracy", is organised by the City of Johannesburg Youth Affairs Unit, the Gauteng Youth Directorate and the Eldorado Park and Kliptown Urban Regeneration Youth Programmes.
The main purpose of the summit, according to Johannes Thakeli, Youth Affairs coordinator, is to make sure that "youth at regional level start to actively discuss issues of their own development as well as empowerment".
He added that the summit would identify issues that may need to be considered at this year's Provincial Youth Summit to be held in June. It will also focus on a possible agreement to support the 2003-2008 integrated youth development strategies for Gauteng.
The integrated youth development strategy combines the efforts of all departments, together with that of the civil society sector, in a common youth development strategy.
Among speakers at the summit will be Johannesburg Executive Mayor Amos Masondo, who is expected to deliver a keynote message, and Makhukhu Mampuru, director of Gauteng Youth Development.
