JOHANNESBURG WATER (JW), the city's water and sanitation service provider, has invested nearly R3-million for the upgrading of a 64-year-old water pipe in Johannesburg's CBD.
Work on the upgrading, according to JW, has already started and is expected to be completed by August. It will comprise the relining of 2 100 metres of the water main and installing a cathodic protection system, which will protect the pipe from wear and tear.
"The relining of the pipeline is part of the company's ongoing programme to upgrade the water and sanitation infrastructure of the city and will assist in reducing the number of water pipe bursts and leaks," the water company said.
The current line being upgraded, termed the G15, runs along Rosettenville Road, supplying the CBD area and the Parktown reservoir. The rehabilitated section lies between Hector Norris Park and the M2 motorway.
During rehabilitation period, one or more southbound lanes will be closed for traffic as the G15 is located below the road surface of the southbound lanes of Rosettenville.
"The closure of these lanes may cause traffic disruptions and motorists are advised to drive carefully while construction work is on-going," warned JW. Wemmerpan Rd, running parallel to Rosettenville Rd, could be an alternative, as could be Sprintz Avenue.
Though no water disruptions are expected during the rehabilitation period.
Meanwhile, JW is planning to re-route a water main in the Randburg surburb of Bromhof on Tuesday 20 May. This will affect the water supply in that area between 7am and 4pm on that day.
Residents can get more information by calling JW's 24-hour helpline on (011) 688-1500.
