Mayor urges
settlement of bus strike

March 18, 2003

By Jonews Reporter

JOHANNESBURG mayor Amos Masondo met with the unions involved in the ongoing Metrobus strike on Monday and urged them to seek a negotiated settlement as soon as possible.

According to the mayor's spokesperson Kgotso Chikane, the meeting with SA Municipal Workers' Union (Samwu) and the Independent Municipal and Allied Workers Trade Union (Imatu), covered issues other than the ongoing strike. These included the pension fund, disciplinary cases, industrial relations at Metrobus and service delivery.

Chikane said the mayor was concerned about the strike as it had an adverse effect on the city, workers, Metrobus and commuters.

The bus strike over a new shift structure introduced by management late last year, entered its third week on Monday.

The mayor urged the unions to avoid taking the "precarious financial viability" of Metrobus for granted. He warned that if the strike continued, it could have serious consequences for workers and the city.

Chikane said the city was confident that a solution would be found and called on all commuters to be patient.

Commuters with prepaid tickets will be reimbursed.
