Police chief calls
for fewer gun licences

March 11, 2003

By Jonews Reporter

METRO Police boss has called on the South African Police Service (SAPS) to drastically reduce the number of legal firearm licences issued to the public.

Chief of Johannesburg Metro Police, Chris Ngcobo, told 702 radio news on Monday that stricter measures must be put in place before anyone is issued with a firearm licence.

Ngcobo said potential gun owners should also be strictly screened before their licences are approved and that gun owners must have safes in their homes, to avoid children getting hold of the weapons.
