THE City of Johannesburg's water and sanitation utility, Johannesburg Water will be announcing the winners of the sanitation and sewerage system competitions during an open day on 20 June at Lord Khanyile Community Hall in Ivory Park, Midrand.
Joburg Water has been running the competitions as part of its education campaign in schools and among community members in Ivory Park and the aim was to highlight the importance of water as a basic resource in order to alleviate water metres and pipes vandalism, among others.
Since the beginning of the competitions in February this year, learners had been asked to creatively express their views on sanitation and sewerage disposal either through illustrations or writing an essay.
"The competition will grow learners in terms of knowledge, skills, values and attitudes," hoped Jameel Chand, Joburg Water spokesperson.
Teachers had also been advised on how to include issues relating to sewerage disposal and sanitation into the curriculum, to boost learners and teachers' understanding of sewerage system.
"The aim of the competition among community members was to provide an opportunity for organisations, including non-government (NGO) to showcase the work they have done in sanitation and sewerage system fields," Chand said.
The presentations will be exhibited at the same venue as the open day from 18 to 20 June.
The prizes include vouchers and a cheque to the value of R2500.
According to Chand, the competitions have been part of their education campaign creating water awareness and promoting user responsibility.
"It has been a successful campaign and we have been planning on running it in other areas as well."
