Charity benefits from Joburg's big walk

July 29, 2003

By Jonews Reporter

THE South African Guide Dogs Association for the Blind is R26 000 richer this week thanks to the generosity of the participants in Johannesburg's annual 702/FNB Walk the Talk.

The association was this year's designated charity for the annual family event.

Nearly 23 000 walkers took part in Sunday's fun-filled event, which organisers say is double the size of the annual Comrades Marathon.

The walk, which started and ended at the Wanderers Stadium in Illovo, had four distances - from the competitive 42km distance to the easier and more popular 7 km route. The shortest route, of 7km, drew 13 000 walkers, the largest number of participating athletes in a single event in the country, according to the organisers.

At the end of the walk participants, friends, relatives and even pets joined in the fun and entertainments at the stadium.
