Traffic comes to
a halt for walkers

July 24, 2003

By Tshepio Mogotsi

CORLETT DRIVE in Illovo, north of Johannesburg, will be closed from before dawn on Sunday morning until the end of the 702/FNB Walk the Talk, as 25 000 walkers participate in the annual mid-winter event.

The main road in front of the Wanderers Stadium will be closed to traffic between Irene and Rudd roads from 4.30am. People attending the event can park their cars at the James and Ethel Grey Park and the nearby Winston Ridge Park. AA signs will mark the designated parking areas.

Corlett Drive will be open again at 2pm, after participants have completed the last event.

The 42km race starts outside the Wanderers Stadium at 6.30am; the 21km race at 7.30am; the 14km at 8am and the 7km walk starts at 11am. Organisers have urged competitors to be at the venue at least an hour before the start of their event.

Participants wanting to find out their routes can visit www.702.co.za or check the back of the official entry form.

The two longer distances, the marathon and half marathon, will be timed. The 7km fun event will allow participants to walk with prams and pets.

Parents who do not want to walk with children can leave their youngsters in the Spar Kiddies area, "where their children will be cared for". There will also be a safe area for the storage of tog and sports bags at the Wanderers Stadium, according to the organisers.

Late entries will be accepted from until Saturday 26 July at the Wanderers Stadium, between 9am and 4pm.

Refreshments will be on sale on Sunday at the stadium and water will be available along all the routes. Water for pet will available only on the 7km route. People are also welcome to bring along picnic baskets, the organisers said.

The fun-filled entertainment will begin in the stadium at noon.
