Widespread power failure

January 7, 2003

By Mandisi Majavu

A GENERATOR problem at Kelvin Power Station triggered a massive power failure across the city on Tuesday morning.

According to City Power's Uyanda Mbuli, the power was restored by mid-afternoon. The affected areas, she said, were Houghton, Norwood, Illovo, Kensington, Gardens, Atholl, Lyndhurst, Melville, Yeoville, Orange Grove, Killarney and Mountain View.

Bramley, Highlands North and parts of Gresswold remain affected by the power outage.

Kelvin Power Station, in the north of the city, supplies energy to all the affected areas and hence 14 suburbs can be without power at once, said Mbuli.
