Deal ends Gauteng strike

January 28, 2003

By Tendai Dhliwayo

THE three-day strike by the National Education, Health and Allied Workers Union (Nehawu) has ended after the union reached an agreement with the Gauteng welfare department over bonus payouts.

The two organisations eventually agreed that a task team should be set up to "to develop a performance tool for evaluation of groups and teams," and that all workers will be evaluated for a notch promotion. The department further agreed to give workers performance bonuses for the period 2001/2002.

"The answers provided have been satisfactory and welcomed by all parties," said MEC for Social Services and Population Development, Angie Motshekga.

Describing the strike as a successs, Nehawu spokesperson, Moloantoa Molaba, said the welfare department would not have given in if it had not been for the strike.

"The strike achieved its results. The most important victory is, there will be no individual worker who will be evaluated for performance bonus except for notch increments," said a statement by Nehawu.

He said the union is happy there will be equal distribution of the R5 million that has been allocated for bonuses.

Nehawu will be part of the task team to develop a performance tool.

"This is an agreement that takes us forward and it also enables us to serve our people better," added Nehawu provincial secretary, Andile Kolanisi.
