ANC wins inner
city by-election

GCINUMZI MAHLATSHANA, representing the African National Congress (ANC), has won the by-election for ward 60 in the City of Johannesburg's Region 8 (Inner City).

The Independent Electoral Commission conducted the by-election on Wednesday 22 January, to replace Monty Masilo, the former councillor for Ward 60 passed away on 1 November 2002 after a short illness.

In terms of the Local Government Municipal Structures Act, the municipal manager, after consultation with the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC), must set a date for the by-elections, which must be held within 90 days of a vacancy in a ward council.

Mahlatshana was contesting against Lebese Moleli of the Christian Democratic Party, Workers Party's Mlondeni Dindi and Mzamo Satsha of the United Democratic Movement.

Ward 60 constitutes of the following areas: The whole of the CBD, Braamfontein, Braampark, New Town and Sunnyside.
