Kensington 87 to know
their fate in March

January 23, 2003

By Mandisi Majavu

THE magistrate in case of the Kensington 87 will hand down judgment on 5 March, after hearing evidence from both sides in Jeppe Magistrate court on Wednesday.

The 87 people, who are members of the Soweto Electricity Crisis Committee, were charged with public violence case after being arrested while protesting outside the home of Johannesburg's mayor Amos Masondo in April last year.

According to the mayor's spokesperson, Kgotso Chikane, the 87 were arrested after they marched to the mayor's house in his absence and demanded to see him and when told of his absence, they forced their way through, causing damage to the mayor's house.

After the prosecution concluded in its case, the defence counsel asked for the charge to be dismissed due to lack of evidence. The court adjourned and the case will resume on 5 March, when the magistrate is expected hand down judgment.
