NOT even a week after the Johannesburg Metro Police lost one of their own, another Metro police officer was shot at on Saturday, 18 January. Luckily enough the officer, Velaphi Mazibuko, was not harmed.
Spokesperson for the Metro police, Wayne Minnaar, says he would not describe these two incidents as characterising police under attack, but rather an indication that the Metro police are dealing with serious criminals.
After receiving an alert from the public that a group of men were shooting in the air in Bez Valley, east of Johannesburg, the policeman went to investigate. On his arrival the criminals turned their guns on him, shooting his police car three times - damaging his vehicle bonnet, windshield and engine.
The men managed to escape before a police backup could arrive, says Minnaar. So far no arrests have been made.
A statement issued by the City says the Metro police "will continue to enforce the laws with no fear, favour or prejudice".
