MOTORISTS using the N1 highway, from the Rivonia interchange to the Buccleuch interchange, are being urged to exercise extreme caution for the next five months following road repairs that commenced on Tuesday 14 January.
The R22-million project will see the whole section being resurfaced with new asphalt as the existing one has cracked, says project manager for the South African Roads Agency limited (Sanral), Hennie Kotze. He adds that a small part of the N3, from the Buccleuch interchange, will also be affected as construction will also be in progress there.
During this period, Murray and Roberts, which has been awarded the contract to undertake the repairs, will be operating during "off peak periods to limit the impact on the road users". Only one lane will be open to traffic between 8pm to 5am but during the day motorists will enjoy the full roadway, including portions that have been repaired, says Kotze.
The improvements of this section of the N1 will ultimately benefit road users, says a statement by the National Roads Agency, and is an intervention by Sanral to preserve South Africa's national roads.
