THE deadline is approaching fast. By Friday 28 February all motorists are expected to have converted the driving licences in their green ID booklets into the new credit card format or face the consequences.
This is according to Ndivhuwo Mabaya, spokesperson for the Minister of Transport, Abdullah Mohamed Omar, who explains that depending on the province you are in, motorist can expect a fine of up to R1 000, for failing to convert.
For the Johannesburg area, there are four places where people can do the conversion: it is Sandton, Langlaagte, Midrand and Roodepoort licence departments. People can expect to pay a R122 for the conversion to be processed, says Sizwe Matshikiza, spokesperson for the City's department of transport.
He says the satellite stations are not for conversion purposes, rather for the yearly vehicle licence renewals.
Matshikiza says the new licences take about six weeks to process from application to receipt.
Meanwhile, the national Department of Transport has activated the Credit Card Format Enquiry Desk, which handles all the enquiries related to the conversion of licences. The help desk can be contacted at Tel: (012) 304 9540 or e-mail: pretori@ndot.pwv.gov.za
