Licence conversion
deadline extended

February 28, 2003

By Jonews Reporter

THE deadline for the conversion of driver's licenses has been extended by two months until the end of April, acting Transport Minister Jeff Radebe announced on Friday.

Radebe told a media briefing in Pretoria that the decision was taken after consultation with the various provincial MECs for transport.

Radebe said about 79 percent of licence holders had heeded the old deadline. Approximately 1.2 million motorists across the country have not converted their licences as yet. Most of them, about 535 000, are in Gauteng. Northern Cape is at the bottom of the list, with about 19 300 motorists still without the new card.

Thousands of drivers have been packing licensing and testing centres around the country over the past few days in a last-ditch effort to acquire the credit card format licence, in time for the initial deadline of midnight Friday, or face the long arm of the law.
