THE festive season will becoming to downtown Johannesburg a little early this year, when the City of Johannesburg switches on the Christmas tree lights in Mary Fitzgerald Square in Newtown on Thursday.
The lighting ceremony, set for 6pm, is bound to delight both young and old.
Acting Executive Mayor, Councillor Nkele Ntingane, will switch on the lights, while the youth choir from Soweto's Royal Priesthood Ministries, Tu Nokwe and the Amajika Youth Club will sing carols and other festive songs.
Around the square a set of three layers of swag lights and light frames with holiday motifs will cast a warm glow over the pavements. Three lights in the form of starbursts will also be placed on top of the house on Jeppe Street, the Nick Oasis and MuseuMAfrika.
In the square itself there will be a beautiful 15-metre high Christmas tree to entrance visitors. The tree, which took over a month to build, consists of 10 and a half tons of steel and has 8 000 lights spiralling down from the top.
The City of Johannesburg encourages everyone to join in the lighting festivities and enjoy the "pulse of the heart of South Africa - Johannesburg". Safe parking will be provided at the venue.
Says Joburg spokesperson, Nthatisi Modingoane: "We hope the festive night will put everyone in the right spirit."
The Christmas lights on Mary Fitzgerald Square will be on from 11 December to 11 January 2004.
