Festive fun at
the Joburg Zoo

December 5, 2003

By Tammy O'Reilly

IF the children fancy a fun mix of pony rides, puppet shows, snake petting and bird watching, then the Johannesburg Zoo in Parktown has just the thing for them these holidays.

A 10-day holiday programme, designed not only to entertain but also to inform, will run from Tuesday 9 December to Friday 19 December. With full-day, half-day and overnight programmes to choose from, kids won't have an excuse to get bored this holiday.

The programme allows for interaction with animals, learning how to treat snakebites and fun stuff like puppet shows and ferry rides. Children will get the opportunity to look into animal bedrooms and find out what they think are tasty treats.

Adventurous seven to 14 year olds can find out why water is so important and get up close to some "crazy cats", while the three to six years olds will be introduced to the elephants and meet some animal babies.

Half-day programmes run from 9am to midday at a cost of R40. The full-day programme, which includes lunch, runs from 9am to 3pm at a cost of R90.

For those wanting to spot the zoo's nocturnal animals there is the overnight camp, a Zoo Night under Stars so Bright. This sleepover, on Monday 15 December, comes complete with a light supper and breakfast rusks. Kids need to be collected on Tuesday 16 December at 8.30am.

For more information contact Deona on 011646 2000 ext 263 or Martin-John on 011 646 2000 ext 358. Bookings are essential.
