THE owls in the Johannesburg Zoo may be forgiven for being somewhat confused on Sunday night when the 10 000 globes on the Tree of Lights were officially turned on.
Casting a brilliance over the festive season, the Hospice Tree of Light will be lit up every Friday, Saturday and Sunday evening until 11 January.
Towering to a height of five storeys, the tree is set to become a Joburg institution, with children (and their parents) travelling from all over the city to see the lights.
Visitors are encouraged to support Hospice by buying a R50-globe for the tree in memory of loved ones who have passed on, or in support of those who are terminally ill.
The 13-year-old tree, acquired two years ago from the Hospice organisation, is situated opposite the Old Elephant House and people are encouraged to bring along picnic baskets to add to the festive cheer. Picnic packages will also be available from the zoo restaurant.
It will cost R10 to get into the zoo between 5.30pm and 6.30pm while the Tree of Light is on display.
