THE Johannesburg Tourism Company has commissioned a series of publications to further its aim of vigorously marketing the city, and encouraging tourists to spend more time in Joburg.
The company hopes to extend the length of stay of tourists from the present three days. It hopes too to increase the number of tourists visiting the city, to "extend the geographical spread of tourism, and to level out the seasonal spread of the tourism economy of Johannesburg".
"Through our varied marketing channels we hope to increase the average length of stay of visitors by an additional day and ultimately increase the spend on tourism by a third," says Deon Viljoen, CEO of the company.
The Concrete Jungle has been appointed to compile four sets of publications, including the "Enjoy Another Day in Joburg" range of 30 tourism brochures, highlighting suburbs like Soweto, Alexandra, Sandton, and the CBD. Various themes have been adopted, including birding, business, destinations for kids, golf, health, nightlife shopping, restaurants and architecture. The first five brochures are to be launched in March 2004.
An annual "Ultimate Visitors' Guide to Johannesburg" and a bi-annual "Events Calendar" are also to be launched. These will be accompanied by maps of Alexandra, Newtown, Sandton and Soweto.
All publications will be distributed free of charge through tourism centres, embassies, shopping complexes, foreign exchange offices, libraries, hotels, travel agents and car rental companies.
Viljoen adds: "Placing Johannesburg firmly on the map, both locally and internationally, is obviously our primary goal and we are using various mechanisms to achieve this. We cannot, however, succeed without the support of our industry colleagues and would therefore like to encourage companies to bring their tourism product or service offering to the fore by having a presence in our relevant tourism marketing publications."
