SOUTH AFRICA'S jazz giants are set to get Newtown's Mary Fitzgerald Square thumping at tomorrow's "Meeting of Legends", an all day music festival for the whole family.
The third annual music festival, presented by the Standard Bank Joy of Jazz and the Johannesburg Development Agency, will take place on 16 December - the Day of Reconciliation - from 11am till late free of charge.
The top-rate line-up features Sibongile Khumalo, Zim Ngqawana, Busi Mhlongo, the African Jazz Pioneers, Winston Makunku, Tshepo Tshola and Dolly Rathebe.
The festival is part of Gauteng's programme to revitalise Newtown as the entertainment hub of the province. "We believe that bringing music to Newtown will help to attract people back to the city and boost the business sector and economic growth of Gauteng," said director of Group Sponsorships, Khanyi Mlambo.
"The fact that this is a free concert does not imply we will compromise the experience of the joy of jazz, the quality of music or our professionalism," said the chairman of T.Musicman, Peter Tladi, adding that the festival organisation was in hand and it would be "a worthwhile family experience".
