Region 8: the inner city
The Johannesburg Central Region, also known as the Inner City, is where the original mining camps of the City of Gold were established towards the end of the 19th century. Over time, the city spread out; its central business district became dense with high-rise office and residential buildings and an excellent infrastructure developed. Some of the earliest of the extended residential, business and industrial areas that grew up around the centre of Johannesburg also form part of Region 8.

Women's Day celebrations
in the inner city

August 6, 2003

By Lucky Sindane

JOHANNESBURG'S inner city is set to celebrate Saturday's Women's Day with a feast of creative and physical activities, from a 10km fun run to craft displays, from drama performances to a fashion show.

"We will be saluting all our women achievers and women who are committed to community building initiatives," said Junior Ramovha, regional manager of sports and recreation.

The day, organised by the sports and recreation department of Region 8, starts at a brisk pace with a 10km fun run from the Maurice Freeman Recreation Centre, in Bertrams.

The race, sponsored by Rand Water, begins at 7am and T-shirts will be given to everyone who takes part, the sports department announced.

The rest of the morning has numerous sporting and cultural activities lined up at the Maurice Freeman Recreation Centre. An aerobics marathon is set to start at 9am, and will go on until 11am. This will be followed by a series of netball matches featuring local teams.

A traditional dance competition and several drama performances will also be presented. Women will be exhibiting craft works, sewing garments and beadwork, and traditional food will also be on sale.

Later in the day, at 2pm, sees the kick off of a soccer match between an inner city women's team taking on a women's invitation team made up of 60 percent of the Banyana Banyana national squad, according to the sports department.

The day will end at the Braamfontein Recreation Centre, with a fashion show of traditional dress - one of the highlights of the day. The event, sponsored by People's Bank and conducted by Z1 production, starts at 7pm.

Clothing by major South African designers - Sipho Ngubeni, Sun Goddess, Stone Cherrie, Aubrey, Black Coffee, Mac'Michel, Ephraim Molingoana and Nondumiso - will be on display.

Singing star Yvonne Chaka Chaka will entertain guests with her music, while Winnie Madikizela Mandela will talk on "The Role of Women in South Africa".
