JUNIOR officers in the Johannesburg Metro Police Department staged a protest on Friday after demanding a meeting with the city manager and member of the mayoral committee responsible for public safety.
Following a demand given on Thursday to have the meeting, about 80 protesting officers gathered outside the office of chief of police, Chris Ngcobo, on Friday morning.
The illegal protest, according to a statement by the city, comes in the wake of complaints by the officers about discrepancies in pay for mostly junior staff as well as overtime pay. The protesters also called for the suspension of several senior JMPD staff including Ngcobo.
The city has assured residents not to panic or fear disorder as no service delivery would be interrupted.
"A commitment was given to the workers that top city and JMPD management team would meet labour representatives early next week to resolve the matter," said a statement.
All JMPD services will proceed and officers will be performing their duties until the day of the planned meeting, added the statement.
